More knowledge, better choices

Bonson uses a variety of raw materials in its packaging - reduce, reuse and recycle... we have it covered.

Solutions available range from compostable packaging right through to various recyclable plastic options, such as those recommended by WasteMINZ to replace plastics that are harder to recycle.

Bonson offers a wide choice of packaging in these materials and no matter which material you choose for your packaging, you can rest assured that all solutions offered by us meet Bonson's stringent quality criteria.

In 2020 the New Zealand Government announced its decision to phase out single-use packaging made of hard-to-recycle PVC (plastic 3) and polystyrene (plastic 6). This is likely to mean alternative materials such as PP (plastic 5) and PET (plastic 1) become more favoured options as they are able to be accepted by most councils for recycling.

Paper

For timeless and durable food packaging, paper is a natural choice for anyone wanting a highly recyclable option. Paper is a renewable material that has been relied upon for centuries and is being used to replace some plastic products. We do our very best to source paper from responsible plantations.

PLA (Polylactic Acid)

PLA is biodegradable because it is basically PLANT plastic - it is chains of molecules derived from corn starch rather than fossil fuels. It might seem like traditional plastic and performs in a similar way, however because it is derived from renewable plant material, it can fully break down back into organic molecules in the right conditions.

Sugarcane

100% biodegradable, sugarcane packaging is made from a pulp material derived from sugarcane once the stalk has been processed. Our sugarcane ranges originate from renewable plantations and under normal compostable conditions the packaging degrades completely within 90 days. Incredibly durable, this packaging can safely withstand conditions such as freezing, microwaving and reheating in conventional ovens.

Recycled PET (Polyethylene Terepthalate)

RPET falls under number 1 in the recycling scale. Our Recycled PET ranges are made from FDA approved recycled PET material, fulfilling the goal of reusing, recycling and reducing by lowering the demand for virgin PET material. Recycled PET maintains similar performance to virgin PET, making it a good option for reducing the impact of packaging on the environment.

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

PET is classified as number 1 on the recycling scale, and can be recycled into a wide range of things from new packaging (see recycled PET above), to clothing and home furnishings. PET offers excellent water resistance which makes it great for containers carrying liquid. With its clear appearance, it's perfect for allowing consumers to see the contents and enhance product presentation. PET is strong and because of its protective barrier qualities, it provides improved shelf life.

PP (Polypropylene)

Classified as number 5 in the recycling scale, PP, (also known as polypropylene) is a strong and flexible material that is ideal for moulding into a variety of container or lid shapes and sizes. It is very heat resistant, making it suitable for a variety of applications and contents of containers can be easily removed, making recycling easier. The material allows for production of clear and coloured options, making PP a popular choice for enhancing food presentation.

Foil (Aluminium)

Aluminium foil can be easily and infinitely recycled with its food residue removed. The recycled material fully retains its original properties, making it one of the most valuable materials to be recycled. Foil is a great option for keeping food items fresh and crisp. Containers using this material can be placed in the oven or freezer, making them a versatile option for storing and serving food.
